Sample Clauses for Your Will

If you would like to leave a legacy gift, here is a sample clause that can be included in your Will or codicil (Will amendment):

“I GIVE the sum of $________ [or percentage / residue of my estate] to The Incorporated Synod of the Diocese of Ottawa, 71 Bronson Avenue, Ottawa (charitable registration no. 108084658RR0030), for its general charitable purposes to be used for such purposes as its Board of Directors may determine from time to time.”

If you wish to leave a legacy gift to a specific church or parish, you may wish to consider the following clause, which also provides guidance should the funds be unable to be used for your intended purpose (ie. Power to Vary):

“I GIVE to [NAME OF CHURCH] (herein referred to as “Church”), located at [ADDRESS], in the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa, the sum of $________ [or percentage / residue of my estate], to be held and administered through the Consolidated Trust Fund of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa, with the income from such gift to be used for the mission, ministry and general operating purposes of the Church, as determined by and at the discretion of the Incumbent and Parish Leadership.

If, at the time of my death or thereafter, it is impossible, impractical or inadvisable to use my gift (income or capital thereof) for the purposes set out above, or if the Church has ceased to exist or is no longer able to receive or use the gift for those purposes, I direct that the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa may, in its discretion, apply the gift to such other purpose as it considers appropriate and in keeping in mind the spirit and general intent of the bequest.”
